Avalon Home Access is the aging-in-place division of Avalon Industries LLC, a Washington, DC–area operations and facilities company. It’s the same company behind Avalon Plumbing — built around the idea that skilled trade work should be done properly, by people who are accountable for it.
This division exists because home modifications for older adults are usually handled backwards. A family calls a handyman, points at a wall, and hopes the grab bar ends up in the right place. Or a hospital sends someone home with a list of recommendations and no one to carry them out. The result is work that doesn’t quite fit how the person actually moves — or work that never happens.
The OT-led approach
We start every project with a licensed occupational therapist. OTs are trained specifically in how people perform everyday activities — bathing, dressing, cooking, moving around — and how a home either supports that or gets in the way. Our therapist assesses the person in their own space, considers where their mobility is headed, and translates all of it into a concrete plan: what to change, in what order, and why.
Then Avalon’s crews build it. Because the assessment and the construction are the same company, nothing gets lost between the recommendation and the finished work — and if a grab bar needs to move two inches after the client tries it, we’re the ones who come back and move it.

What we believe
Independence is the goal. Every recommendation is measured against one question: does this help the person keep doing things for themselves, safely?
The plan belongs to the family. The assessment report is yours — to use with us, with another contractor, or over time as budget allows.
No fear-selling. We’ll tell you what’s urgent, what can wait, and what you genuinely don’t need.
